WHAT IS THE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN?

The United Methodist Women is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as a whole person through Jesus; to develop a creative, healthy and supportive fellowship, and by participation, expand the concepts of mission in the global ministries.

Here in Juniata, we are located in the

Juniata United Methodist Church
610 N Adams Ave

We meet usually once a month, on Wednesday, in the church basement. However, there are times when we meet on Saturday morning, so check our Events page for meeting times.

You need not be a member of the church, or the JUMW to attend meetings, Everyone is welcome as a guest!

The United Methodist Women is the largest demoninational organization for women. They were originally organized in 1869, with only 6 members. Today there are approximately 800,000 members. The mission of the UMW is to foster spiritual growth, develop leaders and to advocate justice.

Every year members raise up to $20 million for programs and projects which relate to women, children and youth. This money is used not only in the United States, but also in more than 100 countries worldwide!

The local organization, or "units" are broken up into "districts", governed by "Conferences", with the Women's Division being the main policy-making body.

Here in Juniata, we are currently (until January 2014) part of the Nebraska Conference, and our district is Prairie Rivers District (the district will remain the same on January 1, 2014).

Originally the main focus was on foreign mission work, specifically of women and their needs. In the very late 1800's to early 1900's, US mission work was added as the women became more aware of the need in America.

Today, the UMW focuses on mission through various programs and initiatives by:

providing opportunities to grow spiritually
equipping and training women/girls to be leaders
orgainizing for growth and flexibility
working for justice through service and advocacy

While the UMW is considered faith-based or a religious organization specific to the United Methodist Church, membership is based on personal commitment. Members are expected to share of themselves through prayer, participation and leadership depending on their individaul ability. Membership is open to anyone, and you need NOT be a member of the church; nor does membership in the church automatically make you a member of the UMW. You must be willing to commit.
